USGBC Awards LEED Silver Certification to Hilton Garden Inn Arlington, Shirlington

Hilton Garden Inn® Arlington/Shirlington is proud to announce that it has earned The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Rating designated by the U.S. Green Building Council to encourage and facilitate the development of more sustainable buildings. This is the first LEED certified hotel in Arlington county.

The hotel was constructed by Herman-Stewart Construction of Lanham, Maryland, with Program Management provided by Development Management Group of Ellicott City, Maryland. The LEED program was managed by Beery-Rio Architecture of Springfield, Virginia, in consultation with the Project Architect Awbrey Cook McGill, San Diego, California. Achieving LEED certification was based on design and construction elements, including:

  • Green roofs to reduce heat island effect and help filter and slow storm water discharge
  • Energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems which reduce electrical and gas use by 20%
  • Recycling of over 90% of demolition and construction waste
  • Daily reduction of 785 gallons of potable water from low flow water systems
  • Use of indigenous plants requiring no irrigation use of water
  • 38% of all construction materials were manufactured or harvested within 500 miles

The Hilton Garden Inn Arlington/Shirlington is operated by the Huntington Hotel Group. Kevin Keefer, principal of the Huntington Hotel Group, stated, “We are proud to achieve this designation in sustainability. Environmental consciousness and sufficiency is important to both business and leisure guests when choosing a hotel to hold an event or for vacation. Dedication to the environment goes hand in hand with our dedication to guest comfort and amenities.” He continued, “A transition to energy-efficient buildings is an important aspect of hotel development.”

Carlos Abelende, General Manager of the hotel, adds, “It’s a perfect fit in Shirlington which is known for its many cultural and commercial amenities, its walkability, its green space, bike lanes and parks. We’re pleased to be the first LEED certified hotel in the county.” Additionally, the hotel provides employees with a monthly transit pass to encourage use of public transportation.

The Hilton Garden Inn is a member of the Hilton Family of Hotels, which has committed to reducing energy consumption by 20%, Co2 emissions by 20%, output of waste by 20%, and water consumption by 10% by 2014. The company also is committed to focusing on high-impact areas, including sustainable buildings and operations, and the advancement of sustainable design and construction, operations, chemical management, purchasing, and to the advancement of renewable energy as a source of power for operations, not only to reduce its carbon footprint but to develop a viable commercial infrastructure for powering its buildings.

The 142-room Hilton Garden Inn Arlington/Shirlington is located in Northern Virginia conveniently off I-395 in the trendy Shirlington Village at 4271 Campbell Avenue, Arlington, Virginia, just minutes from The Pentagon, Washington DC, and The Smithsonian museums. Hotel amenities include a glass-enclosed Pavilion lobby, two meeting rooms, restaurants, on-site guest laundry facility, and guestrooms with a large work desk, an ergonomic Mirra® chair by Herman Miller, high definition TV, refrigerator and microwave.
