Habitat for Humanity and CHCI to Develop Affordable Housing in Baltimore, Maryland

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation's premier Latino youth leadership development and educational organization, partnered with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake for a day of community service on Friday, November 12, 2010.

The community service project is supported by CHCI Internship program partner Hyundai Motor America and will assist in building a home for Baltimore residents.

As part of an intensive program that exposes young Latinos to the legislative process and strengthens their professional and leadership skills, CHCI Congressional Interns are civically engaged through the completion of a community service project.

"We are developing the next generation of educated and professionally equipped Latino leaders," said Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO. "Giving back to the community and being civically engaged are major components of leadership and CHCI is proud to work together with Hyundai and Habitat for Humanity to help the local community."

“At Hyundai, we value the success of our partnership with CHCI and are proud to be the corporate sponsor of the CHCI Community Service Project,” said Walter Rodriguez, Manager of Diversity and Community Relations for Hyundai Motor America. “We believe that the experience the CHCI Congressional Interns will gain from their community service work on the Habitat for Humanity build site will strengthen their understanding that giving back to the communities in which they live and work is a great leadership skill.”

CHCI’s 2010 Fall Congressional Internship Class features college undergraduate students from 10 states and Puerto Rico, representing fifteen different universities and 10 different fields of study. Interns gain hands-on experience working in Congress and gain access to national leaders and a prominent network of CHCI alumni.

These life changing opportunities are made possible only through the support of Walmart – lead sponsor, AstraZeneca, Comcast Foundation, PepsiCo Foundation, Time Warner Cable, Hyundai – the official sponsor of the Intern Community Service Project, David Bohnett Foundation, GE Hispanic Forum, and Southwest Airlines – official airline of CHCI’s Congressional Internship Program.
