Leighton Contractors has been appointed by Transurban Group as the principal contractor for the design and construction of the $550 million upgrade of the Hills M2 motorway in North West Sydney.
This follows the achievement of environmental approval and contractual close for the upgrade between Transurban and the NSW Government.
Peter Handel, General Manager NSW/ACT & NZ, Construction Division of Leighton Contractors welcomed the decision to proceed with the next phase of the Upgrade project.
“The Hills M2 is one of Sydney’s critical arterial roads, and Leighton Contractors is proud to bring its industry leading skills and experience to deliver this major urban upgrade,” Mr Handel said.
“Our work with the M2 corridor community over the past 12 months has been integral to achieving an effective design for the Upgrade that meets environmental, engineering and community needs.
“Our highly experienced project team looks forward to continuing to work with Transurban and the community over the next two years as we deliver an effective transport solution for North West Sydney.”
Subject to financial close on funding for the project by Transurban, the Hills M2 Upgrade will incorporate the widening of existing sections of the roadway from two to three lanes including the Norfolk Rd twin tunnels, the addition of new access ramps, and the upgrade of operational management and control systems.
Since its selection as preferred tenderer in October 2009, Leighton Contractors has worked with Transurban to lead the environmental approval and community consultation process in parallel with development of the detailed design for the Upgrade.
Leighton Contractors expects to start construction of the Upgrade in the period following financial close. Completion of the Upgrade is expected in late 2012.
The value to Leighton Contractors of the Hills M2 Upgrade contract is $467 million, subject to financial close on funding for the project.
