On September 10, 2010, the Balfour Beatty | McCarthy joint venture, with HKS Architects and Wingler & Sharp as design partners, was selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide design-build services for the Fort Hood Replacement Hospital project at Fort Hood, Texas.
The 944,000-square-foot facility will replace the existing 45-year old Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and provide a new state-of-the-art healthcare facility for our Service Members and their Families.
The $503 million project will include a hospital, outpatient clinics, ambulance garage, logistics building, central utility plant and three parking structures. $351 million of the design and construction budget is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2011 completing in May 2014. The facility will showcase numerous innovative sustainable features and will be designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
“Our team aimed to create a world-class hospital environment that embodies the highest traditions of the Army, evokes the pride of Fort Hood, promotes evidence-based design, and is an environmentally sensitive place for healing and learning,” said Leon Blondin, Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction.
The project team will maximize the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools to help facilitate collaboration and coordination of all project aspects during design and construction. “Our overall goal is to create a truly integrated project team approach not only within our team but also with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and all other stakeholders. We look forward to working with everyone and we’re excited to have the opportunity to help create this world-class facility,” said Mike McWay, President for the Texas Division of McCarthy Building Companies.
