Austria’s largest construction company, has been awarded by Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG the contract to plan and build the Brenner rest stop on the A13 Brenner Motorway including all necessary exterior facilities.
STRABAG will operate the rest stop jointly with partners OMV and Rosenberger for a period of 30 years under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The total investment volume for the project amounts to around € 11.0 million.
The rest stop services will be covered under a single roof featuring a modern architectural style. The services include an OMV filling station with a VIVA shop offering top-quality gastro-to-go services for short stays; for longer breaks, a Rosenberger restaurant, with its first-rate, established gastronomy concept, serves up classic meals from Austrian and Mediterranean cuisine as well as light, vegetarian dishes.
The Restaurant am Brenner offers a comfortable atmosphere and a seating capacity of 300. In designing the restaurant, great care was taken to consider the needs of the younger guests, with an indoor playground and a children’s restaurant with brightly coloured tables and chairs. As Klaus Schierhackl, executive director of ASFINAG, points out: “The rest stop offers customers outstanding gastronomic services and the sale of vignettes. At the same time, this former customs area will become a meeting place for travellers from all over Europe.”
Despite the limited space, the rest stop has sufficient parking (100 car, 10 truck and 5 bus parking spaces) to offer drivers, especially private travellers, the possibility for a restive break. The new rest stop, which is scheduled to begin operations in the summer of 2011, will create some 40 new jobs in the region in the long term.
The A13 Brenner Motorway – with an annual traffic volume of around 1.9 million trucks of all toll categories as well as buses and about 14 million vehicles – is one of the most important north-south connections through Austria. The growth of international cross-border traffic also means that there must be sufficient opportunities for drivers to take rest breaks.
This project is already the fourth rest stop in Austria built and operated by STRABAG AG under a PPP model. In addition to the Wörthersee rest stop (in operation since 2004) and the Schwechat rest stop (in operation since 2008), the Potzneusiedl rest stop on the A6 was opened in October 2009.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the rest stop A13 Brenner motorway will take place on 3 August 2010 at 2 p.m. at the construction site.
