STRABAG AG (Austria) and Hermann Kirchner Polska Sp. z o.o. (Poland), three subsidiaries of STRABAG SE, Central and Eastern Europe’s largest construction company, on 14 October 2010 signed an agreement to build a new bridge complex in Toruñ, Poland.
The works comprise the building of two lanes in each direction, access roads, and a pedestrian walkway and bicycle lane as well as the renovation and relocation of several surrounding streets and the construction of several viaducts over streets and railway tracks, the longest two measuring 830 m and 600 m in length. Because of the increasing transport volume in Toruñ, the 540 m bridge represents a strategic link over the river Vistula. The consortium, consisting of the three STRABAG subsidiaries, will begin construction in Autumn 2010 and expects to finish in 32 months. The value of the contract amounts to about € 139 million.
It is STRABAG group’s next bridge construction project after ambitious A8 Wroc³aw bypass in southern Poland, which is carried out jointly by STRABAG and Dywidag and which is due to be finished in Autumn of 2011. With the new project, STRABAG has technological leadership in special engineering in Poland and is currently building 8 km of bridges in special technology.
In the past few months, STRABAG has proven its competence in bridge building with orders in several European countries. One of these is the full rehabilitation of the Gazela Bridge in Belgrade, Serbia. The bridge, which connects Novi Belgrade with Belgrade, is one of Europe’s most important bridges along the Pan-European transport corridor 10. STRABAG also renovated Margaret Bridge in Budapest. This historic bridge, which measures 637 m in length and connects Buda with Pest, is the longest of Budapest’s nine bridges over the Danube.
“Our competence in bridge building has proven itself in many European countries and we continue to be very interested in bridge building projects,” says Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner, CEO of STRABAG SE, commenting on the new order.
