Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company and leader in diabetes care, today announced that its U.S. headquarters facility in Princeton, NJ has received LEED Silver certification for Commercial Interiors from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The 167,000 square-foot facility at 1100 Campus Road, designed by Philadelphia-based design firm KlingStubbins, includes the following sustainable features:
- Over 80% of the equipment, including personal computers, laptops, and industrial kitchen equipment, is Energy Star-rated.
- Almost 45% (310,800 gallons) of potable water savings are achieved annually from the use of low-flow fixtures.
- New HVAC systems use at least 15% less energy than code ASHRAE 09.1-199.
- Fresh air is brought into the building based on indoor air sensor readings of CO2 levels.
- Daylight harvesting systems conserve energy by using sensors to automatically dim the lights when light levels outside are bright enough to sufficiently light the space. Motion sensors automatically turn lights on and off based on occupancy.
- A private shuttle between the buildings on Novo Nordisk's campus improves connectivity between employees and amenities and provides easy access to public transportation, which encourages staff to commute to work by bus or train as an alternative to driving.
- More than 75% (400 tons) of the construction waste was diverted from landfills.
"Achieving a LEED Silver rating demonstrates Novo Nordisk's commitment to our Triple Bottom Line principle of operating in a financially, environmentally and socially responsible manner," said Jeff Frazier, vice president of human resources at Novo Nordisk. "The focus on sustainable operations throughout our business has helped reduce environmental impacts and decrease costs for both the company and society."
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system was developed by USGBC as a tool for design and construction teams to benchmark green strategies against conventional construction. LEED certification is achieved by earning points within a rating scale. Novo Nordisk's U.S. headquarters facility received LEED Silver certification for Commercial Interiors by earning 27 points out of a possible 57.
