Exclusive industry events and entertainment, innovation and new discoveries enhanced the LIGHTFAIR INTERNATIONAL 2005 experience.
Headlining the LFI 2005 events lineup was the triumphant return of the annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards Presentation which honors outstanding achievement in architectural lighting design. Long recognized as one of the industry’s most coveted honors, the 22nd edition of the IALD International Lighting Design Awards program achieved new distinction as 23 lighting design projects—from eight countries—were recognized. The 23 award-winning designs—the largest grouping of awards ever in one year—came from eight countries, including Italy, Indonesia, Germany, Greece, Korea, Spain, the United States and the United Kingdom. A capacity crowd was on hand to recognize and celebrate the winners in the following categories: the Radiance Award for Excellence in Architectural Lighting Design, IALD Awards of Excellence, IALD Awards of Merit and the IALD Special Citation. Additionally, the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education luncheon was held and presented a total of $45,000 in grants, including the inaugural New Grant Option which funds ideas not historically grouped by category.
The $20,000 grant was given to Jill Mulholland, PhD candidate and Texas A&M University Instructor. Mulholland will utilize the monies to explore the dynamic and science behind the capture, identification and reproduction of light.
Additionally, two $10,000 Edison Price Fellowships were presented which facilitate continuing education initiatives for educators. Recipients were Professor Dorothy Fowles, director of the interior design program at Iowa State University, and Laura Prestwood, Texas Christian University Assistant Professor.
The $5,000 Jonas Bellovin Scholar Achievement Award was also presented for the third consecutive year. Established to reward students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in a lighting program, the 2005 Bellovin award was shared by Kenneth Appleman and Alexander Baker, both students at The Lighting Research Center at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Additionally, the B-K Lighting Fun Run benefiting the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education was held on April 13 in New York’s Central Park. And, the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Profession (NCQLP) held its annual Lighting Certified (LC) Luncheon on-site during the show. NCQLP Board Members recognized members of the LC class of 2004.
