The City of Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Canada, awarded a contract to the joint venture of Graham Construction and Flatiron to build the massive Circle Drive South project, the largest single project in the city’s history and its first design-build contract. Circle Drive is a major road constructed as a ring road in Saskatoon.
The Graham-Flatiron bid of $224 million includes work on the new south bridge, seven kilometers (4.3 miles) of freeway from Clarence Avenue to Clancy Drive, four railway grade separations, sound walls and utility relocation. The proposed roadway will be a four to six lane divided freeway, with provisions for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river and access to recreation trails on both sides of the South Saskatchewan River.
"The Circle Drive South Project will serve a critical role in the future of Saskatoon and area, as it is the final link of the existing Circle Drive system and will eventually become a main component of the future perimeter road system," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said in a press release. "The new bridge, four interchanges and seven additional kilometers of freeway in this project will serve the needs not only of Saskatoon residents, but of motorists from around the province and across Canada as they travel to and through Saskatoon."
Construction is expected to begin this spring and completed in the fall of 2012. Once completed, the new bridge and freeway are expected to improve efficiency for shippers to connect with national and international trade routes, at that same time reducing congestion by nearly 35 percent and improving safety. The project is funded through various entities including the province, Canadian federal government, and the City of Saskatoon.
