Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Amex:BKR), has been presented a Merit Award by the West Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) on the basis of superior professional accomplishment for work performed on the Historic Wellsburg and Bethany Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan.
The Plan was prepared for the Historic Wellsburg and Bethany Scenic Byway Committee and the Brooke County Commission and proposes improvements to the many intrinsic qualities of the Byway to include the creation of recreational opportunities, improved safety and beautification of the area.
“The plan is a comprehensive and visionary presentation and document prepared for the collective use of the region’s many stakeholders to invest in the Wellsburg and Bethany Byway,” said the jury of judges, comprised of landscape architects from the Alaska Chapter of ASLA.
The Plan was prepared under the guidance of the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways and was funded in part by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The Corridor Management Plan (CMP) describes the condition, evaluates the resources and guides the future of the Byway, which is a 22-mile loop running through Brooke County, starting at Wellsburg, heading east to Franklin, then south to Bethany, and finally north and west back to Wellsburg. The Byway CMP tells the story of early settlements in the area, early transportation and industrial development along the Ohio River in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia.
