The Habitat Company has been selected to manage construction services for three housing developments operated by the Gary (Indiana) Housing Authority. The project, which is part of a major investment in Gary's public housing communities, began in July 2009.
"With the expertise and proven track record of The Habitat Company, we can accomplish the Agency's Mission of providing decent, safe and sanitary housing for eligible families in a manner that promotes serviceability, economy, efficiency, and stability of the housing developments and the economic and social well-being of the residents," said Ms. Alfreda M. Peterson, Executive Director of Gary Housing Authority. "We are excited to have them aboard on this project."
GHA is investing more than $5.8 million in HUD funds received as part of the federal stimulus program. The overall program includes rehabilitation of 92 housing units in the Dorie Miller and East Point developments on the city's east side, as well as the demolition of 316-units in the 104-building Ivanhoe Garden development on the west side of Gary.
"We are pleased to partner with GHA on this important undertaking," said Mark Segal, President and CEO of The Habitat Company. "Our past experience managing public housing redevelopment programs in Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit, along with a wealth of internal resources make us uniquely suited to serve GHA's needs."
The Habitat Company is committed to creating sustainable public housing communities that maximize efficiencies for public housing authorities and the quality of life for residents," said Lawrence Grisham, Senior Vice President for The Habitat Company. "We look forward to being a vital part of improving the way of life and creating more robust communities for Gary's public housing residents."
The Habitat Company's Community Development group, which will oversee the projects, has managed the construction of more than $10 million in capital projects for the Atlanta Housing Authority and is currently overseeing the redevelopment of three sites for the Detroit Housing Commission. In addition, the company has managed the development of 7,833 new housing units for the Chicago Housing Authority and more than $708 million in HUD development funds.
