Dow Coating Materials will focus on “Coatings Industry Sustainability – Trends, Challenges and Opportunities” at the 9th Annual Oil & Colour Chemists Association (OCCA) Seminar in Manchester, U.K., on March 1 2010.
The presentation by Dr. Houshang Kheradmand, European Technology Awareness and Innovation Manager for DCM, co-authored by Dr. Andrew Trapani, European Technical Director for DCM, will focus on identifying sustainability trends and opportunities in the global coatings industry, as well as methodologies for integrating sustainable development criteria across the life cycle of a product. This year’s presentation is an in-depth follow-up to the well-received sustainability overview delivered by Dr. Kheradmand last year.
The paper will illustrate how a cross-disciplinary approach to sustainable development involves functions across an entire organisation. Dr. Kheradmand will use examples from Dow Coating Materials to demonstrate how enabling technologies allow paint formulators to create innovative products that combine high performance with increasingly optimised eco-designs.
“Last year’s presentation was a more broad-based overview of how globalisation, economics, population and ecological conditions affect all facets of the international coatings industry,” said Dr. Kheradmand. “This year, we will share practical examples of how we use key metrics to quantify the overall eco-impact, carbon footprint and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of a product, as well as reductions in energy and raw material consumption.”
The 9th Annual Seminar, sponsored by the Manchester Section of OCCA, is an informal, half-day program of technical and general interest lectures open to all coating industry professionals. Founded in 1918, OCCA is a learned society comprising individual, qualified persons employed in, or associated with, the world-wide surface coatings industry.
