SunGard Availability Services is expanding its data centers in Midtown Atlanta and Smyrna, Ga. to meet increasing customer demand for colocation and managed services. SunGard's investment in the facilities will help customers address business IT needs without incurring the capital and operating expenses of building and running their own data centers.
The SunGard expansion specifically addresses the needs of Atlanta area technology companies, which have higher power density requirements than non-tech firms. Also, the Atlanta area has a number of companies that need data center space in more than one center – and SunGard provides a cost-effective, gigabit network connection for customers to link up operations across SunGard's three Atlanta area sites.
"The upgrade of our Atlanta facilities demonstrates our success in helping organizations ensure their critical infrastructure is always on, keeping their business in business," said David Colesante, vice president and general manager, managed services at SunGard Availability Services. "We provide small customers with cost-effective solutions that can grow seamlessly as their business grows. We help medium and enterprise customers manage their applications more efficiently, with infrastructure management and integrated multi-data center solutions that include fail-over options for increased resiliency."
SunGard's colocation and managed services allow customers to run business systems and applications at a SunGard facility rather than at their own data centers. SunGard solutions include hosting services, application services, e-mail and collaboration services, network services, managed security services, storage services and replication services. These solutions are suited to organizations that require a secure, highly available and redundant IT environment.
The SunGard Midtown Atlanta facility is undergoing a large-scale power upgrade designed to support an additional 350 cabinets of IT space for customers. The upgrade includes adding 2.5 megawatts in utility power, doubling facility capacity. The infrastructure will also gain an additional two megawatt generator, one megawatt in UPS power and 300 tons of cooling capacity.
The plan for the Smyrna facility is to add 25,000 square feet of raised floor for colocation and managed services with 16,000 square feet delivered in phase one. The upgrade also includes adding six megawatts of utility power, 2 N utility power redundancy (accessing power from separate utility substations), UPS power with N+1 redundancy and 700 tons of cooling capacity.
In addition to the new managed services and colocation space, the 134,800 square foot Smyrna site will support SunGard recovery services, including SunGard AdvancedRecovery solutions, which deliver high availability using replication and disk-based backup technologies. Additionally, the facility includes more than 300 workforce continuity seats that are fully equipped with the technology, office resources, infrastructure and amenities that organizations need to provide staffers with an alternative workspace after an outage.
With over 30 years experience, SunGard has 35 managed services facilities with a combined total of over five million square feet of data centers in North America and Europe, and a dedicated global network backbone.
SunGard has a highly capable delivery team organized around a service-centric operating model, based on ITIL v3 and ITSM structure. SunGard has demonstrated operational excellence through SAS 70 Type II compliance, ISO9001: 2000 certification, and PCI DSS-compliant facilities and processes. It serves a customer base that includes more than 70 percent of Fortune 100 firms.
