HCC (Hindustan Construction Company), a leading infrastructure construction and development company has been awarded a prestigious contract worth Rs. 374.66 crore from Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) to construct strategic crude oil storage cavern at Padur in Karnataka. HCC is already constructing India’s first strategic crude oil storage in Vishakhapattanam, Andhra Pradesh.
This order is for construction of underground rock caverns (Part A) to store 1.25 million tonnes crude oil. It includes, detailed engineering and design, underground excavation, access tunnels, water curtain galleries, main storage cavern, shafts and associated underground civil works including geological mapping. The project will be completed in 36 months.
This project is part of the strategic crude oil storage caverns being set up by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd, a subsidiary of Oil Industry Development board. The first of these oil storages of 1.33 million tonnes capacity is under construction in Vishakhapattanam.
HCC has a rich experience in underground construction. With technical expertise in underground works in geologically complex terrain, HCC has built India’s first major underground power house in the Himalayan region for the Yamuna Hydel Project in Uttar Pradesh in 1975. HCC is also accredited with building the longest 11.3 km-long Head Race Tunnel (HRT) for Nathpa Jhakri HEP, India’s largest hydro electric power project. The Company has also built 2 out of the 5 largest underground Hydro powerhouses in India, and 3 out of the 5 longest power tunnels in India. Having executed over 170 kms of total length of tunneling, HCC has built tunnels for all types of projects ranging from water supply, sewage, transportation and power generation.
