The largest cable-supported retractable roof in the world
Structal-Heavy Steel Construction (Structal), a business unit of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM) located in Boucherville, QC, has received a letter of intent from PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. (PCL) regarding a contract worth more than $100 million for the construction of the world's largest cable-supported retractable roof, in replacement of the air-supported dome on the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. Renovations to the domed stadium, which opened in 1983, are expected to cost $458 million.
The contract awarded to Structal includes design-assist, detailing and project management services as well as the fabrication and erection of the structural steel and cables for the retractable roof.
Formidable challenges
According to Structal president Luc Pelland, the dimensions and architectural elements of this roof involve formidable challenges, which the Structal team has the know-how and capabilities to meet. "As general contractor specialized in the field of structural steel, we play a vital role in all the steps needed to achieve successful project integration," says Pelland. This construction project, he adds, will bring to 53 the number of North American sports facilities Structal has collaborated on over the years, 20 of which are home to Major League teams.
The steel components will be fabricated by the Canam Group plants in St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC, and Sunnyside, WA, as well as by local and international subcontractors, and will be erected for the most part by local manpower. Both the deliveries and the erection work will begin in the early part of 2010 and continue until the end of the year.
