Chapter Joins with Carpenters to Provide Needed Home Improvements
Operation Homefront Maine has stepped up to the plate to help a Maine family with much-needed home improvements after the husband, an Army paratrooper, returned from Afghanistan with severe injuries resulting from an improvised explosive device planted by insurgents. The blast left the husband using a wheelchair and in need of bathroom renovations that would enhance accessibility and reduce the possibility of a slip-and-fall accident.
"Operation Homefront Maine is honored to be able to assist a military family in need," said chapter president Donna Chapman. "We also are delighted to have the support of the New England Council of Carpenters, which helped us make optimal use of our limited resources by donating much of the carpentry work required for this major renovation project. Had it not been for the carpenters in our area, we would have had great difficulty in meeting the needs of this family, which so very much deserves any comfort and support we can offer," she concluded.
Renovations to the soldier's bathroom include a widened doorway that provides wheelchair access, an accessible sink and vanity and a specially designed tub. The existing bathroom appliances were not only difficult for the solider to access, but also were beginning to crack and fail, since they were not designed for the stresses that occur when used by a severely injured person.
