SRSDI Changes Brand Identity with New Name - The Lighting Quotient

Formerly SRSDI, Company Unveils New Strategic Direction and Brand Identity

The Lighting Quotient, an architectural lighting manufacturer formerly known as Sylvan R. Shemitz Designs Inc. (SRSDI), recently revealed its new brand identity. Founded by industry pioneer, the late Sy Shemitz, the company creates unique lighting fixtures for any commercial marketplace and illuminates museums, schools, libraries, transportation hubs, houses of worship, landmarks, retail stores, and building exteriors with beautiful and efficient light.

Sy Shemitz has been succeeded by his daughter, Allison Schieffelin, who is leading a rebranding effort to highlight exactly how the company differs from the competition and is relevant in today’s lighting landscape. The new branding and name reflects the future of the company and takes Sy’s legacy to the next level by providing answers to those seeking sensible, sustainable lighting solutions that do not sacrifice quality or beauty.

The Lighting Quotient is relevant in today’s market based on the following reasons:

  • Meets today’s energy mandates: Since January 2009, all new buildings in Connecticut must adhere to LEED-certified standards, and The Lighting Quotient, particularly tambient, can help architects get there.

  • A piece of Connecticut’s history: The Lighting Quotient is a major manufacturing company headquartered in one of Connecticut’s landmark buildings for over three decades, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

  • Impacts the state and national economy: The Lighting Quotient employs 160 Connecticut residents and manufactures and assembles all products onsite, eliminating the need for outsourcing and resulting in a tighter supply chain.

  • Superior service: The Lighting Quotient has a design studio in house where each unique product is developed, created and tested. From creation to shipping, products never leave the onsite facility which ensures that all customers receive the benefit of superior, efficient service.

“Our company has a history of looking to the future, spotting trends and creating products that combine the art and rigorous science of light into the perfect equation,” said Allison Schieffelin, Chairman and CEO, The Lighting Quotient. “In full recognition of the accomplishments and tradition of our past, The Lighting Quotient will take our landmark designs into the next generation.”

The Lighting Quotient currently has two product divisions – elliptipar and tambient – both industry leaders known for precise engineering and a design-forward approach that create functional yet aesthetically-pleasing visual environments. Engineers at elliptipar created the first asymmetric luminaire based on the need to produce an even wash of light across any surface, no matter how broad or tall. The reflector combines one elliptical and two parabolic sections to achieve more coverage with fewer luminaires and lower energy costs. Some of the country’s most prestigious structures, such as Grand Central Terminal and the White House, are lit, in part, by elliptipar.

Representing a paradigm shift in lighting design practice, tambient combines two-component lighting systems into a single task/ambient luminaire, eliminating the need for overhead lighting altogether. The system creates balanced luminance ratios with energy usage at 0.6 watts per square foot or less to help buildings achieve LEED certification and reduce their carbon footprint.

To build on the company’s strength, The Lighting Quotient is investing in design talent to improve its existing technology and explore new innovations. Additionally, the company is implementing lean process improvements across the entire organization. Leveraging the growing “green building” movement, The Lighting Quotient will also reach out to facility managers impacted by encroaching energy mandates – including those in the government sector.
