Hellas Construction Completes Synthetic Turf Field for University of Texas

Hellas Construction Installs the University of Texas at El Paso Turf with Unprecedented Speed and Innovation

For Hellas Construction, a bowl game field, complete with removable end zones and logos, can take only two weeks.

In mid-August, Hellas started construction on a synthetic turf field for The University of Texas at El Paso where the Miners, Sun Bowl and Texas vs. The Nation games are held.

New synthetic turf field with removable end zones and logos built at The University of Texas at El Paso in just two weeks.

Since the first Miners game was scheduled for September 5th, turnaround had to be—fast. Most fields take about a month to complete, but special circumstances afforded Hellas the time and resources to finish the UTEP field in just two weeks.

In addition to speed, the field design included solutions similar to the three-field conversion turf system Hellas installed in the new Cowboys Stadium earlier this year. The UTEP field utilizes the same SoftTop™ system as the Cowboys Stadium, but has been modified to best suit the school’s needs. Instead of a full conversion system, the field remains stationary while the end zones and logos are removed and replaced for different games.

UTEP Head Football Coach Mike Price says, “It’s the best turf I’ve been on. It was done exactly the way they said it would be done and it was done on time perfectly.”

Perfect performs. On Saturday, the coach and his team beat the #12 ranked University of Houston Cougars in a 58-41 upset on their new home turf.

The Miners, Sun Bowl and Texas vs. The Nation games will continue to be held at the stadium and each organization will benefit from the field’s flexibility.

Soon, the UTEP softball team will also benefit from the new synthetic turf Hellas broke ground on last week.
