National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) recognizes Constellation Energy’s extreme makeover of Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club
Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), announced today that it has been awarded the Distinguished and Notable Service Awards from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). The awards were presented at NAHRO’s 2009 National Conference and Exhibition in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 4. NAHRO recognized Constellation Energy for its project to renovate the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club of Franklin Square in Baltimore, Md.
“We are very pleased to accept this award and for Constellation Energy employees to be recognized for their commitment to improving the communities where they live and work,” said Terry Castagnera, a government relations program manager for Constellation Energy who accepted the award and led the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club renovation.
More than 125 volunteers from Constellation Energy dedicated 3,600 hours over two weeks in September 2008 to perform an extreme makeover on the Salvation Army’s busiest Boys and Girls Club in Baltimore. Employees replaced old and worn equipment, demolished and reconstructed rooms, added lighting and safety equipment, installed IT hardware and software, and decorated every room with new paint, flooring and furniture. Altogether, Constellation Energy contributed more than $214,000 in estimated labor, materials and in-kind donations to the project.
As a result of the project, the newly renovated Club doubled its capacity and now provides 150 at-risk children with a safe and comfortable place to play and learn.
“The support that Constellation Energy has provided us demonstrates to these kids and their community that they are not alone and that there are people who care about them and want to help,” said Major Roger Coulson, Baltimore Area Commander of the Salvation Army.
