SGB Homes in partnership with Haven Custom Homes have completed the Whitaker model, the first green modular home for the 2009 Homearama show held at Culpepper Landing in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The Homearama show, beginning this weekend, features 12 homes by nine builders with variations of traditional architectural styles ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet priced from the low $300,000s to $500,000. The show, set in the community of Culpepper Landing, is designed to take you back to Main Street America and invites you to make yourself at home as this year's theme. In addition to home tours, the show includes an exhibit center and special days that include a Taste of Chesapeake and the Homearama Furniture Sale.
The Whitaker is a cottage style home designed by Wissmach Architects, a Haven partner architect, and features 2,898 square feet with 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, a custom kitchen, great room, 10-foot ceilings and an oversized detached two-car garage. Trained in both classical architecture and contemporary design, Wissmach Architect designers are committed to location-appropriate designs that have a memory of their cultural past. Constructed in Haven's production facility, the home was built and delivered in a matter of weeks saving time and money and allowing for inherently green features such as low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and Zip Wall roof and wall sheathing. Additional green features of this Energy Star certified home include a geothermal HVAC system, low-E windows and doors, insulated plumbing and lighting fixtures and cork flooring in one room. "We are proud to bring environmentally friendly, energy efficient homes to today's marketplace. The Whitaker home is an excellent example of the superior design, high quality craftsmanship and green features that are possible through Haven's modular construction technique," said Jerry Smalley, CEO and president of Haven Custom Homes.
The home was delivered approximately 80 percent completed then finished on site by SGB Homes, a newcomer to Homearama but no stranger to working with the Tidewater Builders Association. The company started seven years ago by Scott Brooker. A couple of years into his business, Scott began exploring modular building and was introduced to Haven Custom Homes. After building their first home together, Scott knew this was the way to build and wanted to build a long standing relationship. "I'm excited to bring a green modular home to the Homearama show. The building method is faster, better and greener than building conventionally on site. Such in fact, attendees won't be able to pick out the modular home from any of the other homes in Homearama," says Brooker.
The Homearama show begins Saturday, October 3rd through Sunday, October 18th. The event will be held Sundays through Thursdays from noon to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. Admission is $10 for one day, $17 for two days and children ages 12 and under for free.
