Council Backs Glasgow's Tallest Tower Plan

A stylish new landmark building on Glasgow ’s skyline was today granted detailed planning consent by Glasgow City Council. Named Elphinstone Place , the thirty nine storey building is to replace the former Strathclyde Regional Council offices at India Street and will become Scotland ’s tallest building. At 134 metres the unique ‘tear-drop shaped’ building will be a full nine metres higher than Scotland ’s current tallest structure – the tower at Glasgow Science Centre (125 metres).

The £100 million, apartment, office and retail development, will comprise 202 luxury homes, 20,950 sq m of office and retail space, incorporating leisure facilities with pool, on a 1.4 acre site at the western end of St Vincent Street , adjacent to the M8 motorway.

It will be developed by Glasgow-based Elphinstone, an innovative and enterprising group of private companies specialising in residential and commercial development, land and property investment.

Elphinstone’s Chief Executive, Ken Ross said: “We are delighted to be given the go-ahead for Elphinstone Place . The project team have created a world-class design and a building which we believe will make Glasgow proud. It will transform and revitalise an important area of the city.” Mr Ross continued: “ Elphinstone Place will provide new homes and offices and will underline Glasgow ’s status as a great European city, reflecting its growing optimism as an exciting place to live and work.”

Alan Stark the Project Partner of leading Scottish Architects, Cooper Cromar said: “This project has been an exciting design challenge and we are delighted that it has been so warmly received by the City”.

Elphinstone has been working closely with Glasgow City Council, the owners of the site, to maximise the potential of the highly-visible location, adding new residential and commercial assets that will be a spur to further regeneration of this area of Glasgow city centre. Subject to all the necessary consents Elphinstone intend to start demolishing the current buildings in 2005, with construction work starting 2006. The development will be ready for occupation in 2008.
