Cleverly combining the old with the new, due to the use of insulated render, has won two new build projects the INCA Andy Swan Award 2008, for the best use of external wall insulation for retail, hotel and leisure purposes. The Awards are sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association.
The winner is the Bottle Lane development, a landmark site in the heart of Nottingham, which consists of three retail floors, a two-storey bar and restaurant, and a four-storey hotel above. The hotel has retained a Victorian frontage as a contrasting street level entrance. The specifier, Benson and Forsyth Architects specified a PermaRock insulated render system, as being suitable for application on the various substrates, lightweight metal frame and concrete. Vast expanses of glazing are also used.
The system comprises 90mm mineral fibre, finished with a bright white through-coloured render, achieving a 0.35W/m2K U-value. The system designer is PermaRock Ltd; and the installer, George Howe Ltd, both INCA members.
The runner-up is the new extension to the well-known Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Waterloo Rd, Merseyside. The specifier, the Owen Ellis Partnership was faced with a double challenge – the need to complement the existing 1930’s art deco building, and an exposed coastal environment. The quality and finish of the material specified was most important due to the high profile of the course, consistently rated as Britain’s number one golf course and hosting the 2008 Open Golf Championship.
The Alumasc Swistherm external wall insulation system was specified to match the finish of the original building, whilst achieving greater thermal performance of the extension and extending maintenance periods and overall life span of the re-rendered existing building. The system incorporated 50mm EPS insulation (120mm for the detailing), finished with a white silicone render with a rolled texture and recreation of art deco detailing, to achieve a u-value of 0.35W/m2K. The system designer was Alumasc Exterior Building Products Ltd; and the installer, Pegasus External Ltd, both members of INCA.
