The College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has invited several nationally and internationally prominent architects, designers, historians and theorists to present their work as part of the Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series this spring.
Free and open to the public, all lectures are held at 5:30 p.m. in the McCarty Auditorium of the Art + Architecture Building.
The lineup this spring includes:
- Feb. 4: Max Robinson - A UT professor, Robinson recently was awarded the American Institute of Architects East Tennessee Gold Medal for his contributions to the architecture profession. He has spent 29 of the past 40 years in teaching and administrative positions at UT Knoxville, including serving as director of the School of Architecture for 10 years. Throughout most of his teaching career, Robinson has maintained an independent architecture practice.
- March 3: Trey Trahan - President and principal-in-charge of Trahan Architects in Baton Rouge, La., Trahan is the only American designer to receive the prestigious Architectural Review Award for Emerging Architecture, the world's leading celebration of work of emerging architects.
- March 7: Karim Rashid - A leading figure in the fields of product, interior, fashion, furniture and lighting design and art, Rashid heads a design practice in New York City. Designing for an impressive array of clients from Dirt Devil to Prada, Rashid's work has been featured in venues across the world, and his career has been marked by some of the most prestigious design awards and honors.
- March 10: Dietrich Neumann - Professor from the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, Neumann is a recognized expert in the field of architectural history. Many of his publications and essays on the subject have won national and international awards. He has served on the board of directors of the Society of Architectural Historians for several years, currently as second vice president.
- March 31: Janet Abrams - Director of the University of Minnesota Design Institute, Abrams is a well-known critic in the fields of architecture, design, new media and the visual arts. Her writings have been published in many U.S. and European newspapers and magazines, and she has developed and co-produced several international conferences. A Fulbright Scholar at Princeton University, Abrams also has taught at Yale University and Parsons School of Design in New York.
- April 7: Stefano Riccioni - A historian of art and architecture based in Rome, Riccioni received a post-doctoral fellowship from Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, a very prestigious honor. Educated at the University of Rome and the University of Paris, his research focuses on epiconography, a new methodology that integrates palaeography, text and image in the study of visual art.
- April 14: Elizabeth Meyer - A nationally recognized scholar and teacher, Meyer is an associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Virginia, where she has served as landscape architecture department chair and director of the graduate landscape architecture program. She is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and has previously taught at Harvard and Cornell universities.
