Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP), a world leader in outdoor residential lighting systems, has introduced a Lighting Control Automation or LCA timer using Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) technology that can be used to control not only outdoor lighting, but also lights and appliances inside the home. This new programmable system is designed to enhance home security and energy conservation, while opening up a path to total home lighting and appliance automation.
With capacity for up to 99 separate timed programs, the LCA timer from OLP features "set it and forget it" technology that automatically adjusts for daylight savings time, dawn and dusk and leap year. Homeowners can custom tailor the timing of outdoor and inside lights based on work and family schedules, including a vacation option that gives a home a lived-in look.
"While this system was created as an option for our outdoor lighting systems, it has numerous applications inside the home, including the control of lights and appliances, such as hot water heaters," said Winston Edwards, an outdoor lighting specialist with OLP. "Our timer represents an entry point for total home automation as well as a way to use lighting for aesthetics, safety and security as never before possible."
UPB technology was originally developed by PCS Powerline Systems of Northridge, Calif. and released in 1999. It is the emerging industry standard for communications among devices for home automation, using existing power lines to carry digital instructions to each light or appliance under its control.
The LCA timer from OLP features a manual override option for all programs, emergency buttons for lighting up a house, battery back-up and non-volatile storage of all settings in the event of power outages. OLP trained technicians install the timer as part of an outdoor lighting installation, set the timer based on homeowner preferences and offer homeowners training in its use.
"The demand for outdoor lighting systems continues to grow not only because of aesthetic appeal, but also due to safety and security concerns," Edwards said. "For as little as $8 per month a family can enjoy the security of knowing that they will never come home to a dark yard or a dark home. And, when a family travels, they have the confidence that they are doing everything possible to deter break-ins."
