Professional tradesmen and small construction companies often don't have time to consider the environmental impact of their work, or the money that could be saved by improved environmental management.
There are over 350,000 construction-related companies registered in the UK, of which around 90% are small companies. There is a plethora of environmental guidance available, but to start to make a real difference, it needs to reach the professional tradesmen and small businesses.
A new CIRIA project will develop an 'Essential Green Guide' specifically for professional tradesmen, providing practical, concise advice and information. The practical nature of the guide will help improve awareness of relevant issues and how improved performance could save money.
The guide will provide easy to use checklists and summaries of relevant legislation to help identify environmental problems on site, minimise costs and improve existing performance. The guide will be distributed free of charge through the trade counters of a range of builders' merchants and via trade federations free of charge. Project partners include Jewson, B&Q, Travis Perkins, the Federation of Master Builders, Environment Agency and the Builders Merchants Federation.
