Iain Wright, Junior Housing and Planning Minister, today announced seven new appointments to the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC), the consultative body which provides strategic and technical guidance to the Government on standards for the design and construction of buildings.
The new appointments will ensure that the Government is provided with the appropriate practical and technical advice in areas covering architecture, consumer interests, local authority building control, the needs of those with disabilities and sustainability.
The new BRAC members bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise in their respective fields and have been appointed to further enhance the quality of advice provided by the Committee. They are:
- Tracey Aarons, Building Control Manager, Mendip District Council;
- Ziba Adrangi, Director, PRP Architects;
- Professor Keith Bright, Access Consultant and Chartered Building Surveyor;
- Nicholas Cullen, Research and Development Partner, Hoare Lea Consulting Engineers;
- Trevor Haynes, Building Control Manager, Birmingham City Council;
- Adrian Levett, Consultant in Change Management; and
- Andrew Shipley, Policy Manager, Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Iain Wright MP said: "I am delighted to announce the names of the seven new Committee members. These new appointments will add significant expertise and understanding to BRAC, enhancing still further the already exceptional set of skills and experience within the Committee.
"The importance of BRAC in helping to deliver safe, healthy, accessible and sustainable buildings cannot be disputed and the Committee will continue to have a key role, particularly given the increasing focus on sustainability and climate change issues."
BRAC Chairman Michael Finn said: "The balance of expertise and experience on BRAC is extremely important and I am delighted that we are once again strengthening the membership with these new appointments. Building Control has served the community well for decades, but must continue to adapt to the challenges of today and the need to improve the built environment. BRAC welcomes the new members and eagerly awaits their contribution to our debates and advice to Ministers. I would also like to thank the retiring members, who have contributed to the Committee's work over many years and will be sorely missed."
The new BRAC members took up their posts on 1 October 2007 and will initially serve for three years. Following the conclusion of their term of appointment, two current members of the Committee - Sean Walsh and Kelvin Williams - stood down at the same time following seven years' service. There will be further changes to the membership in 2008
