New Sewage Treatment Plant for Larger Homes Launched by Klargester

Leading manufacturer Klargester has launched a new version of its BioDisc Sewage Treatment Plant to help owners of larger homes conform to a best practice guide on product sizing.

The BA-x is for five, six and seven-bedroom properties, which should have sewage treatment plants catering for seven, eight and nine people respectively, according to the latest edition of British Water’s Code of Practice on Flows and Loads.

In the past, many sewage treatment plants were specified according to numbers of occupants in a house. However, to ensure the product is suitable for the number of people who could potentially live in the house in the future, the code says sewage treatment plants should be sized on the basis of the number of bedrooms.

This means that if they are to comply with the best practice code, large properties occupied by few people will need bigger plants than they did in the past.

The BA-x, which caters for up to nine people, complements Klargester’s single home BioDisc range. This previously comprised the BA for six people and the 12-population BioDisc.

The BA-x incorporates all the essential elements of the original BioDisc, which was the first sewage treatment plant in the UK to conform to new EU regulations EN 12566-3, which are due to come to force in 2008.

Kevin Roe, UK Sales Manager for Klargester, said: “The new BA-x has been introduced in response to strong recommendations in British Water’s Code of Practice that sewage treatment plants should be sized in accordance with the number of bedrooms in a house, rather than the number of people.

“We expect these recommendations to increase demand for slightly larger sewage treatment plants for many homes, hence the new BA-x perfectly complements our product range.”

According to British Water’s Code of Practice, a property with up to and including three bedrooms should have a sewage treatment plant catering for a minimum of five people, and allowance for an extra person should be added for each additional bedroom.
