Communities and Local Government Minister Angela Smith today visited Gallions Housing Association's Ecopark to view low-carbon affordable housing.
Located in Thamesmead, Ecopark is an affordable housing scheme of 39 houses for rent as social housing. This includes two, three and four bedroom houses designed specifically to reduce energy and water consumption - these measures result in a lower environmental impact than standard developments. Running costs for residents living in these homes is therefore less than average.
The houses are not the only eco-friendly measures in this scheme; they have been built on brownfield land and the development of the land in and around the Ecopark has been designed to include the drainage of rainwater into a network of canals containing reeds and other water plants.
During her visit, Angela Smith was shown round the ‘Naked House’, a show home which showcases selected environmentally sustainable products and hands-on and interactive exhibits.
Angela Smith said:
“We need to build new homes for the next generation but we also need to make sure that they are eco-friendly and affordable too. This is why we have announced a new timetable and strategy to make all new homes zero carbon by 2016.
“It’s great that Gallions have taken the opportunity to integrate green technology into their affordable housing, demonstrating that practical, cost effective environmentally sustainable development are accesible to all.”
Gallions Housing Association Chief Executive, Tony Cotter said:
“It's very encouraging to see politicians taking such a serious interest in the Green Agenda. Ecopark is a great example of low-carbon housing and we're delighted it continues to be recognised as a demonstration of practical and affordable environmental excellence.”
