RIBA Presents UK Higher Education Buildings Exhibition

11-22 April 2007, Gallery 2, RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1

The Royal Institute of British Architects’ Higher Education Design Quality Forum (HEDQF) presents an exhibition showcasing the high quality and diversity of architectural design in the UK higher education sector. Distinction by Design will include the best higher education buildings, landscape projects and masterplanning projects completed since summer 2002. Projects ranging from science laboratories and business schools, to libraries and student accommodation, will be on display at the RIBA in London, prior to touring UK universities during 2007.

The Distinction by Design exhibition will feature projects including The Blizard Building at Queen Mary’s London by SMC Alsop; an experimental learning centre at Warwick University by MJP Architects; Cass Business School at City University by Bennetts Associates Architects; and the Department of Music at York University by van Heyningen and Haward Architects.

Speaking about the exhibition, Ian Caldwell, HEDQF Chair said
“The last decade has seen substantial, and much needed, investment in new and refurbished buildings to support the work of the higher education sector. In making this investment, university institutions have recognised that the quality of architecture, the environment and landscaping play an important role in attracting and retaining staff and students and providing a stimulating environment in which scholarship can flourish.

“The small selection of projects illustrated in the Distinction by Design exhibition provides a glimpse of the large number of excellent new buildings and refurbishments being carried out across the country.”
