Sonera has selected SRV to implement Finland’s largest open data centre, in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki. In the project, SRV will act as the project management contractor.
The site of the data centre is in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki. Construction of the data centre will begin in summer 2016 and the building will be completed in early 2018. The completed data centre will be approximately 34,000 square metres in size, a large part of which will be built underground. On completion, the data centre will accommodate up to 200,000 servers.
“In selecting a contractor, Sonera paid particular attention to the expertise of site personnel. We are delighted to be given the opportunity to implement such a significant project. The data centre is seeking to attain important LEED and CEEDA certificates. The goal of obtaining the certificates will guide planning and work on the site from the earliest stage,” says SRV’s Juha Toimela, Vice President, Business Operations in Finland.
On completion, Sonera’s data centre will be Finland’s most modern and energy-efficient data centre. It will use electricity produced with renewable forms of energy, and waste heat will be recovered. In the future, Sonera will be able to convert waste heat into useful energy using the district heating network.
Sonera’s new data centre is intended for use by Finnish and international companies. It will serve companies that need data centre facilities and cloud services.
“For us, this is a significant investment, which will help us support our customers’ future needs. There is great demand for data centre services, because most of the digital infrastructure’s telecommunications, server and storage hardware as well as their management are located in data centres,” says Sonera’s Petri Niittymäki, Director, Corporate customer business.
