The Warren County Energy Project, designed and built for Dominion Virginia Power through a collaborative venture between Burns & McDonnell and Zachry Group, received top honors at the power industry’s largest annual conference. The Warren County project was named Gas-Fired Project of the Year before being named top overall Project of the Year, besting eight finalists.
The awards were announced at POWER-GEN International 2015, an event focusing on the industry's latest innovations, technical trends and business strategies. The editors of Power Engineering and Renewable Energy World magazines honored winners in four fuel categories.
“This recognition is certainly gratifying for Zachry Group,” said Keith Manning, Zachry executive vice president, Enterprise Strategic Development. “Our client will always have these awards to remind their customers that this plant has been a great addition to Dominion’s fleet. It also signifies another successful teaming of Zachry Group and Burns & McDonnell.”
“For the Zachry project team, adding these awards to honors we’ve been fortunate to receive at previous POWER-GEN conferences underscores our ongoing commitment to stay on the industry’s leading edge,” Manning said.
The 1,346-megawatt Warren County Power Station began commercial operation one year ago and is capable of providing electricity to about 325,000 homes. The gas-fueled generating facility is among the nation’s cleanest fossil-fuel-fired stations. It features Mitsubishi combustion turbines and Alstom heat recovery steam generators. A thermal energy storage system chills water at night and cools the inlet air by day, which boosts the capacity of the combustion turbines while also reducing water consumption. The unique cooling system, combined with the state-of-the-art combustion technology, maximizes plant output and ultimately helps Dominion Virginia Power provide highly cost-efficient power for its customers.
“We are proud of Warren County Power Station for many reasons,” said David A. Christian, chief executive officer at Dominion Generation. “It is already one of the cleanest and most reliable in the nation and was built to be both environmentally and economically efficient.”
