Swinerton Builders San Diego recently completed work on Hotel Z, bringing a contemporary new must-stay destination to Southern California visitors.
Conveniently situated in the heart of San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, the existing four-story wood-framed extended-stay hotel was fully overhauled. In its place, Swinerton built a beautiful new boutique hotel, which opened its doors right in time for this year’s Comic-Con International convention.
Located at 521 6th Avenue, the hotel was previously a Holiday Inn Express and was sold mid-stream and converted to an independent hotel. At 40,000 square feet, Swinerton gutted the building’s interior and renovated it completely—transforming 200 rooms into 96 contemporary suites, while adding a new lobby, business center, and convenience store. A variety of room layout options are available to suit all visitors’ needs, including families, couples, solo travelers, and disabled guests.
The entire hotel received all new finishes, elevators, windows, paint, and signage. Seismic structural upgrades were also made, along with public improvements to the sidewalk, brick pavers, and landscaping. Swinerton self-performed a significant amount of work on the project, including all of the concrete, drywall, and acoustical ceilings. Work on the hotel began in November 2014 and wrapped-up in early July 2015.
Owned by Washington-based Pineapple Hospitality, Hotel Z is the newest gem in their seven-hotel West Coast portfolio. Swinerton partnered with developer J Street Hospitality on the project, while teaming closely with Awbrey Cook Rogers McGill Architects. Swinerton is proud to bring a luxurious hotel with a modern feel to the Gaslamp Quarter, and looks forward to joining forces with its partners again in the near future.
