Australia’s Most Ecologically Sound Home

In a suburb of Newcastle a house is under construction that when completed will be the most eco friendly home in Australia. The owner is Bernard Hockings, a professional builder and environmental consultant to the Master Builders Association. Mr Hockings is so certain that his design will be fully self sufficient that the house will not be connected to traditional utilities.

Built to house himself, his partner and 13-year-old son, the house will take its water supplies from a 40,000-litre rainwater tank incorporated into the house foundations. Waterless composting toilets will be used and grey water from washing and other household uses will be passed through natural sand filters and ponds before being used on a small orchard. Electricity supplies will come from a roof mounted wind turbine, solar cells and a small biodiesel generator.
