Iberdrola USA and Central Maine Power Co. (CMP), recently marked the installation of the last new support structure for the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP) – a $1.4 billion upgrade to the company's bulk power transmission system. CMP broke ground for the MPRP in August 2010 and expects to complete construction on-time, and on-budget in June of this year.
"This is another milestone for the Central Maine Power team, which has kept this project on schedule and on budget through nearly five years of construction," said Bob Kump, chief corporate officer of Iberdrola USA. "The MPRP is a demonstration of Iberdrola's commitment, as a global industry leader, to invest its expertise and resources in New England's energy infrastructure."
"This is a special moment for everybody involved," said Sara Burns, president and CEO of CMP.
"I'm grateful to all of our employees and contractors who have worked for years to build a stronger, smarter grid for Maine. Thousands of workers have had a hand in this project over the past five years, and now we are in the homestretch. Their legacy will serve the region for generations."
The MPRP reinforces the reliability of New England's bulk power system. The project included the construction of four new 345kV substations, one new 115kV substation, and related facilities linked by approximately 440 miles of new transmission lines. More than 2,700 people worked directly on the construction, and it's estimated the project created another 900 jobs through indirect and induced employment.
