With the launch today of the Government’s Waste Strategy consultation, WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) has stressed that the UK must not lose focus on recycling.
Jennie Price, Chief Executive of WRAP, said: "We must not take our foot off the accelerator. The UK has made significant progress by almost doubling household waste recycling in the last four years. But comparisons with many of our European neighbours show that the task is far from finished, particularly in our metropolitan areas where some are still recycling less than 12%. We simply can’t afford to lose momentum."
With retail packaging making up over 40% of the rubbish in our household bins, WRAP is also welcoming the Government’s proposal to prioritise waste minimisation.
"WRAP's waste minimisation work with leading retailers and brands – such as Heinz, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Britvic – is highlighting the potential for innovation to reduce the impact of our consumption-led lifestyles. Cutting out waste before it is produced is the most effective way of making best use of our resources."
