The UK government has announced plans that will result in renewable energy being provided to 1 in 6 homes in Britain. The scheme will result in the world’s biggest wind farms being built at three offshore locations at an estimated cost of £6bn and resulting in the creation of 20000 new jobs.
More than 3,000 towers will be built between 5 and 75 miles off the coast in three areas; the Thames Estuary, the Wash on the east coast and from Morecambe Bay to north Wales. It is expected that this will put the government on track to generate 10% of electricity from greenhouse gas-free sources by 2010.
