Cutting-edge and creative architecture, innovative interiors and beatific outdoor spaces are front and center in the November/December 2014 issue of Senior Living Executive, the flagship magazine of the Assisted Living Federation of America.
The annual Senior Living By Design Awards program showcases diverse projects marrying innovative design with functionality and beauty, honoring resident choice, and promoting independence. In its third year, the competition reveals increased design sophistication improving resident lifestyle.
In senior housing, great design can and must encompass a range of factors. More than simply aesthetic, design must recognize the need for wellness services, desire for community, safety for memory care and other residents, and, in many cases, the ability to care for residents as they age. Upscale appeal is also a major focus in this year’s awards program. As baby boomers enter their silver years, many senior living operators are building and rehabilitating communities to reflect a growing desire for a more high-end experience.
“This year’s Senior Living by Design Award winners exhibit a broad range of approaches to these and other issues. It’s a busy time for senior housing design, a moment of energy and high creativity,” said ALFA Interim CEO Maribeth Bersani.
Senior living design experts and judges Susan Rodiek PhD, NCARB, EDAC, associate professor and holder of the Skaggs Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design, College of Architecture at Texas A&M University; and Victor Regnier, professor of Architecture and Gerontology at University of Southern California’s School of Architecture, chose six senior living residences for special honors:
