Eagle Construction, a large residential builder based in Glen Allen, Virginia, has selected AZEK Pavers as a standard feature on 45 townhome units at Shire Place in Richmond. Priced at $350 - $400,000, the homes feature front and back balconies and some have rooftop terraces.
According to Purchasing Director Jamie Spence, AZEK Pavers were selected based on saving installation time and labor while providing customers with a low-maintenance and great looking area. "We've liked the product for a few years now, but the advantages really came into play with the Shire Place project with so many rooftop and balcony applications. Collaborating with our installer, Northeast USA, we knew AZEK Pavers would become the standard."
With up to 95% recycled content from scrap tires and food containers, AZEK Pavers are stain- and scratch-resistance and, at less than half the weight of concrete and brick pavers, install up to three times faster. The lighter weight also makes them easier to transport to a rooftop.
For Shire Place, Spence said sheet products are labor-intensive and can often rip when the crew tries to overlap them. Tile was also found to be too heavy for elevated jobs. "We ultimately chose the easier installation of AZEK Pavers," said Spence. "They look great and eliminate maintenance issues for our customers."
"We love AZEK Pavers because it's such an easy system to work with," said Cheon. He said the homeowners are excited to have them as well. "They never expected this type of paver on a rooftop or balcony. They just love it."
Available in five colors, AZEK Pavers install on unique grids that ensure perfect alignment every time. The AZEK Resurfacing Paver, which doesn't require a sub-base, can be quickly and easily installed over a solid substrate like an existing deck or rooftop. "This really helps our timelines, since we can complete four rooftop terraces in a day," said Cheon.
Spence says Eagle Construction is planning two more projects in which AZEK Pavers will be the standard for rooftop applications - a 104-unit townhome in Williamsburg and another 30-unit development in Richmond. Like Shire Place, all of the units have balconies that will feature AZEK Pavers and some will have terraces.
