Southwest Greens International, along with parent company Shaw Industries, announced completion of a series of Head Start playgrounds on Kauai, Hawaii. Beginning in 2010 with the Kekaha playground, Southwest Greens Hawaii finished the Koloa branch earlier this year. Diane Reece, RA (CPM) directs Child & Family Service programs such as these in the Islands.
Head Start is a federal program designed to reach disadvantaged kids at a young age and give them the best opportunities available. Ms. Reece saw an opportunity to convert playgrounds built on sand and dirt into a fully utilized area. Extending play time is important for schools that have tight schedules and limited resources. Synthetic turf not only provides a consistent well-groomed area but eliminates the habitat needed for bugs and other lawn pests.
Cesar Portugal, SWG Hawaii Commercial Accounts, led the multi facility projects on the island of Kauai. Hawaii is a very agricultural state and Cesar was quite proud to give the keikis (Hawaiian for Children) the chance to play and enjoy their outdoor time. In one case, the playground was shared by free-range chickens and cats. Ms. Reece comments that the island of Kauai is not an easy place to do business. The dedication and generosity of SWG Hawaii has benefited the local community.
