ABM Selected to Improve Energy Usage of Public Buildings in Harrisonburg, Virginia

ABM, a leading provider of facility solutions, announced its ABM Building Services business has been selected by the City of Harrisonburg, VA to implement a second phase of energy and facility improvements through ABM’s Bundled Energy Solutions program. Estimated to be completed in December 2014, ABM has guaranteed the City of Harrisonburg more than $2.5 million in energy and operating cost savings over the next 15 years through the project.

ABM’s Bundled Energy Solutions Program is designed as a financial solution to meet clients’ technical facility needs and sustainability goals. For ABM, the goal is to drive costs out of a client’s operating budget, allowing savings to be reallocated to fund mission critical facility needs. ABM originally assisted Harrisonburg in 2010 with the city’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) award to maximize energy savings on several HVAC projects.

“The City of Harrisonburg has the opportunity to improve the energy usage of our public buildings, thereby reducing our carbon footprint and saving money,” said Kai Degner, Member of City Council. “We have once again selected ABM to provide these energy efficiency improvements as they have proven they can provide the best value for the city.”

The project focuses on two Harrisonburg public facilities – the Public Safety Building and the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center. Facility upgrades to the Public Safety Building include lighting; central plant replacement comprising of the boiler, chiller, and cooling tower; DHW heater replacement; terminal unit modification and replacement; controls replacement; and window film. Improvements to the Community Activities Center include replacing the HVAC units, building controls, and lighting, including within the parking lot.

The result will be a 50% reduction of energy consumption and the new building automation system will maintain consistent temperatures and lighting levels within the buildings, resulting in improved occupant comfort and satisfaction while greatly reducing their carbon footprint.

“The solutions ABM is providing support the city’s energy and sustainability goals while shrinking their owning and operating costs,” said Scott Giacobbe, President of ABM Building & Energy Solutions. “We are proud of our continued partnership with the City of Harrisonburg, which enables us to provide solutions that make a substantial difference within the community.”
