PCL Construction is pleased to announce that it won two Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) awards at last night's Western Pacific Region Design-Build Awards Banquet in Newport Beach.
PCL received the "Merit Award" for the University Student Union (USU) at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), and the "Distinction Award" for The Green Build Terminal Expansion at the San Diego International Airport. The awards recognize PCL Construction's outstanding achievements in building two of the region's recent landmark projects.
Built by PCL, the USU at CSUSM is a four-story, 89,000 sq. ft. building which cost $43.9 million. The USU features new dining, an open-air amphitheater, a student activity center, a rooftop garden and patio, and a 9,000 sq. ft. ballroom. The USU was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, and required that PCL Construction overcome numerous technical and geographical challenges. Today, the new USU is the campus center for socialization, casual interaction, programmed activities, and student organizations.
Completed by a joint venture of PCL Construction Services, Turner Construction Company, and Flatiron Construction Corp, The Green Build Terminal Expansion is part of the largest construction project in the San Diego International Airport's history. The $470 million project includes a three-story, 460,000 sq. ft. expansion of Terminal 2 with ten new gates, twice as many security lanes, expanded concessions, and 1,500,000 sq. ft. of new taxiway and jet parking. The Green Build is essential in supporting a nearly 100% anticipated increase in airport traffic over the next 20 years.
Dale Kain, Vice President and District Manager for PCL, says, "We'd like to thank the DBIA for these awards. To have the design-build teams recognized and acknowledged by others, especially from a prestigious organization such as the DBIA, is very satisfying. PCL is honored to be counted among DBIA's award winners."
