Baker Wins $4.2 Million Amtrak Contract to Provide Construction Services for Five Major Projects

The National Passenger Railroad Corporation (Amtrak) has awarded Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker International, a three-year, $4.2 million dollar contract to provide construction management and inspection services for five major projects as part of the New York State Department of Transportation and Amtrak Hudson Line Improvements Program.

The contract award demonstrates Baker’s continued rail and transit market growth and inroads with large-scale construction services opportunities.

Baker’s Michael Brescia, P.E., principal-in-charge said, “We are extremely pleased to be performing this construction services contract for our longstanding client, Amtrak, in close coordination with NYSDOT and Capital District Transit Authority. This Program, comprised of five projects, is vital to Albany’s regional mobility and represents the most significant capital rail improvement in over 20 years.”

The Program will preserve and improve certain rail facilities and upgrade rail service, which includes increasing track speeds, improving systems reliability and operational flexibility, by implementing a State High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (NYSDOT–HSIPR) for the Empire Corridor in the State of New York. The five major projects include the addition of a second track from Rensselaer Station to Schenectady, a fourth track and platform extensions at Rensselaer Station, communications and signals upgrades, and grade crossing improvements in order to accommodate the increase in railway traffic.

Baker has now completed recent construction services assignments for Amtrak in Trenton, N.J., Wilmington, Del., Seattle, Wash., and Elizabethtown, Pa., as well as serving as PennDOT’s Program Manager for Amtrak's Keystone Corridor from Philadelphia to Harrisburg.
