Louis Berger Gains National Accolades for Sheikh Zayed Street/Tunnel Project in Abu Dhabi

Louis Berger recently gained national accolades for the Sheikh Zayed Street/Tunnel Project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The project won a Grand Award in the non-design category from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW), as well as a National Recognition Award from the ACEC national organization.

"The Sheikh Zayed Street/Tunnel project has served to greatly reduce traffic congestion in Abu Dhabi," said Thomas Topolski, executive vice president and managing director of Louis Berger's Middle East and North Africa operation. "This was a visionary project by Abu Dhabi's rulers and the Abu Dhabi Municipality and I am honored to see it acknowledged by our industry peers."

Louis Berger served as program manager for the $1.36 billion reconstruction of Sheikh Zayed Street, one of the most important transportation corridors in Abu Dhabi and one of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of the emirate. The project involved construction of a limited access cut-and-cover tunnel to allow at-grade traffic to access local roads, while subsurface through traffic bypasses the crowded downtown area entirely.

"The judges were impressed with the solutions that were reached to counter the site constraints and the numerous ways the owner/client's expectations were obviously exceeded," said Hugh "Mac" Cannon, executive director of ACEC/MW.

The Engineering Excellence Awards celebrate the most outstanding project achievements in the field of engineering around the world. Projects are judged based on originality, innovation, value to the public and the engineering profession, complexity, social and economic considerations, sustainability, and exceeding client needs.
