In January 2006, BASF will launch Styrofan® NX 6690 X, its new latex binder for carpet backing that is ammonia-free and provides improved properties that enable the manufacture of more durable, longer lasting carpets.
“This new carboxylated styrene-butadiene dispersion delivers important advantages that can help carpet manufacturers to make better products and achieve greater success in their markets,” said Derry Martin, Business Manager for BASF’s Functional Polymers carpet backing business in North America. “The improved physical properties of Styrofan NX 6690 X can enable our customers to manufacture a more durable carpet that will last longer. At the same time, our customers’ workplaces and the environment will benefit from the absence of any ammonia emissions during carpet production or storage. This provides a win for our customers, for their customers, for the environment, and aligns with the BASF 2015 strategies to ‘Help Our Customers Be More Successful’ and to ‘Ensure Sustainable Development.’ ”
Styrofan NX 6690 X is a low odor, frothable dispersion that provides improved elongation without loss of tensile strength. Its dried films are very strong and exhibit excellent elongation and water resistance. It is an excellent carpet binder that may be compounded to provide binding strength, bundle saturation and water resistance. It also has excellent coating properties, and may be used in frothed or unfrothed systems in both direct coating and pan applications.
BASF manufactures Styrofan NX 6690 X latex binder in a state-of-the-art process that utilizes proprietary technology to eliminate ammonia.
