Stellar Energy Commences Work on Central Utility Plant for RagingWire Data Center's Ashburn Campus

Stellar Energy announced today that it has begun work on a central utility plant for RagingWire Data Center's 150,000 square foot data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia. RagingWire designed, built, and now operates 650,000 square feet of data center space in Sacramento, California and Ashburn, Virginia, and is currently building a 150,000 square foot data center in Sacramento and breaking ground on a new 78-acre data center campus in Ashburn.

The Stellar Energy chiller plant being installed at RagingWire features an efficient modular fabrication, built-in redundancy and environmentally efficient design. The chiller plant is part of RagingWire's expansion of its state-of-the-art Virginia data center campus which was designed to house the computers of top enterprise, cloud computing, Internet, and government organizations.

"RagingWire is unique in the data center industry in that we design, build, and operate our own facilities," said John McCrackin, Director of Mechanical Construction of RagingWire Data Centers. "Our patented 2N+2 design and in-house construction team allow us to build data centers with twice the redundancy of a traditional data center design at a lower cost. Stellar Energy's understanding of the cooling demands for data centers and their system performance guarantees were key reasons we selected them for this project."

The RagingWire project marks Stellar Energy's fifth data center utility plant project in 12 months. "Demand for our modular chiller solutions was strong this year, and we anticipate further market growth as data storage needs continue to expand. Modular solutions provide critical scalability, flexibility and product engineering advantages for clients to add dependable capacity as they need it, without any interruption to their critical facility operations," said Kurt Peninger, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Stellar Energy Americas.

Stellar Energy's water-cooled ModUtility® Chiller Plants are fabricated in the company's state-of-the-art fabrication facility in Jacksonville, Florida. The factory build approach offers several benefits, including a shortened construction schedule, improved safety, lower capital and operating costs, better construction quality control and reduced project risk. The modules utilize environmentally friendly non-ozone depleting refrigerant. Built-in redundancy and factory built and tested design ensures 24/7 performance for mission critical functions like data storage.

With more than 20 years experience, Stellar Energy has delivered over 1 million tons of refrigeration (TRs) of chilled water plant solutions worldwide. In addition to the ModUtility® Chiller Plant, Stellar Energy's capabilities include:

  • Free Cooling: Stellar Energy's best practice solutions for Data Centers includes customized heat exchangers for free cooling. The environmentally sustainable and economical free cooling method saves energy through reduced chiller loading.
  • CHP/Cogeneration: Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, can be an efficient way for Data Centers to reduce energy costs and boost thermal energy supplies.
  • Redundancy & Back-up: Stellar Energy's solutions are built with redundancies to ensure reliability for mission-critical functions like data center storage. The company's electrical systems utilize emergency power and thermal energy storage systems are an option for back-up chilling.
  • Modular Electrical: Modular electrical rooms are a smart power option for Data Centers, offering all the scalability and flexibility of modular chiller plants.
