Stahl Construction recently completed work on the Minnesota Army National Guard Field Maintenance Shop at the Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS) in Arden Hills, Minnesota. Designed by BWBR Architects, the 107,500-square-foot state-of-the-art facility includes the space and equipment to maintain National Guard vehicles and provides a centralized location for Guard training around the Twin Cities.
Along with 36 maintenance/training bays and four warm-up and wash bays, the building also includes tool rooms, offices, classrooms, and a fitness area.
In addition to constructing the field maintenance shop, the scope of work included approximately 15 acres of paved concrete for the storage of roughly 1,500 military vehicles. Due to the size of the paved area, managing and treating the resulting storm water was a major priority for the Army National Guard. Stahl Construction’s superintendent Gary Maciejny is certified in Erosion and Stormwater Management through the University of Minnesota and his involvement ensured the Army National Guard’s goals were met. He planned for and employed stormwater treatment management methods to protect the surrounding environment and meet the requirements of the Rice Creek Watershed District.
“This project was a coordinated effort between the design team, subcontractors and Stahl. My partner on site, Gary Maciejny, worked with the subcontractors to make sure they understood the work thoroughly and their collaboration resulted in an exceptional project,” said John Petersen, Stahl’s project manager. “We were also thrilled to be able to work on a project with sustainability goals. Our stormwater management and building’s green features make it a facility that the Army National Guard can be proud of.”
The $25 million project features several major sustainability initiatives and is expected to receive LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Its green elements include solar hot water heating, 80,000-square-feet of infloor radiant heating, 40 kW solar photovoltaic systems, and an inverted roof for light harvesting. Two cisterns were also installed to capture rain water which will be filtered and used in the wash bays and for site irrigation. Stahl Construction is also proud to announce that over 86% of the total building construction waste was diverted from landfills to be recycled and reused.
