Construction began on 175,900 buildings in England in the 12 months up to September.
These new buildings could be saving energy if owners carefully consider their sites. For example anywhere exposed to winds could require additional heating.
Another energy-saving tip is to invest in wall cavity insulation and loft insulation, which will drive down heating bills and reduce the amount of wasted energy.
During the quarter to September, government statistics show that 45,300 buildings were started and 37,800 were completed in England.
Owners of existing buildings can also improve their energy-efficiency by taking simple measures such as installing double-glazing to keep heat in and by using draught excluders.
