A range of pipework and fittings has been installed in an apartment development as part of a project to restore Bradford’s Lister Mills to their former glory.
Both Durapipe ABS pipework and our Friaphon sound attenuated drainage system were specified as part of a £6m project by developers, Urban Splash.
The first building at the 14-acre Lister Mills site, once the world’s largest silk mill, is to be transformed into the Silk Warehouse, a complex of 131 apartments, with community and commercial space on the ground floor. ABS pipework was specified in sizes ranging from 1" to 4" to meet the needs of the boosted cold water supply throughout the building. Specified by RAD Mechanical, Services Ltd, the mechanical/plumbing contractors chose the high performance thermoplastic pipework for speed and safety of installation as well as its economic benefits.
Mark Radcliffe, of RAD Mechanical Services Ltd, said: “Durapipe ABS is lighter than traditional materials, making it easier to handle on site and safer to use because it doesn’t require hot works. Durapipe ABS offered the project a proven, high quality system and we would definitely use it again.”
Friaphon was specified in sizes 110mm and 160mm to meet the needs of the rainwater and soil drainage throughout the development. M&E consultants at Arup Building Services consultants, who specified Friaphon for the project, opted for the drainage system because it incorporates excellent sound insulation, which was a crucial requirement to minimise noise emitted by sanitary installations within a mixed, high density, premium facility, containing luxury homes and retail and office space.
Kate Longley, of Arup, said: “We regularly use Friaphon because it provides built-in sound insulation, which reduces the transfer of noise throughout residential buildings. It is also lightweight, and therefore easy to carry on site, which is important from a safety point of view.”
The corrosion-free materials used in Durapipe ABS and Friaphon also provided additional benefits to Urban Splash, by increasing overall product lifecycle expectancy and reducing the maintenance and replacement costs of the building’s water distribution and soil drainage pipework. Durapipe ABS and Friaphon are both manufactured in millimetre sizes, with Durapipe ABS also available in inch measurement.
Our Durapipe ABS range can be used for a diverse range of applications, including air-conditioning and refrigeration and food and beverage processing. Friaphon is constructed using a robust, twin wall structure and does not require lagging, which offers a superior solution for all above ground drainage and internal rainwater applications and is ideal for the design and build developments of inner city apartments and the like.
Work began on the Silk Warehouse in October 2004 and the first residents will move into the complex during November 2005.
The development marks the first part of a wider regeneration scheme by Urban Splash to bring new homes, new business and employment opportunities to the landmark site.
