SGS Institut Fresenius Partners with Siemens to Implement Concrete Energy Efficiency Measures

The Siemens Building Technologies Division analyzed the energy consumption at the Taunusstein location of SGS Institut Fresenius over a period of two months. Commissioned by SGS Group, the analysis provided a comprehensive overview of all energy-related processes and the current state of the organization’s energy management efforts.

The goal of this detailed report was to identify the existing energy saving potential. The findings resulted in concrete energy efficiency measures, which SGS is currently implementing in cooperation with Siemens. In total, SGS’s Taunusstein location will cut annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 20 percent – equivalent to what a VW Golf 1.4 TSI would emit if it circled the earth along the equator 125 times.

The costs for implementing the energy efficiency measures are offset by savings in the low six figure range (in euros). These savings will pay for the required energy efficiency investments within 3.7 years. Siemens provides the interim financing and guarantees the specified energy and cost savings over the term of the contract. This multi-year model is known as Energy Savings Performance Contracting. SGS will use the savings resulting from this project to increase the company’s energy efficiency even further.

Essential measures to boost energy efficiency will include switching from oil to gas heating, adding a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, installing a high-efficiency boiler and optimizing the building automation system. After the proposed steps have been completed, Siemens experts will monitor energy consumption via remote access. In addition, the Taunusstein location will install a Green Building Monitor like the one already in use at the HQ of SGS Group in Geneva. Green Building Monitors provide information about current energy consumption as well as energy-related facts and figures. The goal is to motivate employees and visitors alike to conserve energy.
