AMEC, the international project management and services company, has merged its UK design and construction businesses into a new Design and Project Services division employing a total of 4,500 employees.
The move responds to growing market demand for a combined design, project management and delivery business and furthers the company’s strategy of moving all of its operations to provide higher added-value services. This follows a review led by John Moss, managing director of AMEC’s construction services business since July, who will lead the new division.
"We are moving away from stand-alone construction,” said John Moss. “Today, customers are looking for total solutions, and want AMEC to be there to take the problem away. Reorganising our business in this way means we can do that, because we can manage the whole project from one place.”
The new business will design, project manage and deliver assets and infrastructure in the key sectors of defence, education, healthcare, manufacturing, pharmachem, transport and water. In the North West, operations at Birchwood and nearby Adlington will be merged.
Most of the 200 employees at Adlington will move to Birchwood, although it is likely that there will be some redundancies amongst office support service staff.
John Moss said: “We very much regret local redundancies and will keep them to a minimum, but recognise that these are sometimes inevitable to ensure the future health of our company. In this case, as two businesses come under one roof, some support jobs will be duplicated. We will be making every effort to work with those individuals affected to help them with their future plans.”
